It’s not just parents that are feeling completely hopeless and desperate, teachers are just as clueless as to how to deal with this new generation of teenagers. It’s like being in front of a locked door with an ever changing access code.

Kids born in the year 2000 or later cannot be dealt with in the same way as previous generations. They live, think and react differently. They interact with adults and their peers in a unique manner. They manage their love lives and friendship circles in their own ways. All this while juggling the pressure of social media, with their public image at the heart of their every thought and action.
The pandemic restrictions only aggravated the situation and increased the gap between them and the previous generation. Our biggest challenge today is to better understand today’s teens and their underlying motivations, no matter how complicated it is. Only then can we effectively convey to them the importance of a healthy lifestyle, academic success and how to avoid the pitfalls of peer pressure.
They are always connected and have access to information at their fingertips. They expect instant gratification and have a hard time projecting themselves, especially in these unsettling times. More than ever, parents and teachers need to adapt their dialogue in order to keep the lines of communication open and positive. Instead of blind confrontations, we need to approach them with full transparency, respecting the changes in today’s society and bridging the inter-generational divide. The goal will be to teach from experience while explaining our rationale and ultimately convincing them instead of forcing them.
Teens today may be serious, rational and creative, yet they are also narcissistic, self-indulgent and impatient. It is up to us to help them give direction and meaning to their lives.
