Restless children are more than ever a concern for childhood specialists. Educators, rehabilitation professionals, healthcare providers, and parents are trying to understand and are exhausted trying to curb the rise of these disruptive behaviors. The need for action, the pursuit of immediate sensations, and “channel surfing” are societal trends that make hyperactivity a current issue.
Medical research confirms that some children have a specific brain predisposing them to attention deficit and agitation. According to a recent study, 3% of children may have this neurological disorder known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These atypical children have always existed, but they were perhaps better contained in the last century. Could the codes of the 21st century be partially responsible for the surge in childhood hyperactivity, a result of the unique encounter between an excitable child and an exciting society…?
The management of hyperactive children sparks many controversies, despite a growing range of therapeutic strategies. In any case, the approach must be multidisciplinary, involving psychotherapy, parental guidance, interaction with the school, and potential rehabilitation. The use of psychotropic drugs will be considered in severe cases when the symptoms isolate the child. The challenge is to quickly calm behavioral outbursts that negatively interfere with the child’s emotional and cognitive development.
Let’s not forget that in a constantly changing world, it is also possible to transform this handicap into an asset! As a completely renewable energy, hyperactivity can even intelligently assert itself as a subtle strength. It just needs to be well understood and well managed…
