New to Geneva? Wondering what this is all about? L’Escalade a brief history:
L’Escalade is one of Geneva’s most famous historical events, celebrating the city’s defense against the surprise attack by the Duke of Savoy on the night of December 11–12, 1602. The Savoyard troops attempted to scale the city’s walls (hence the name “Escalade,” meaning “scaling”) and seize control of Geneva, but they were repelled by the citizens.
One of the most iconic stories tied to L’Escalade is the legend of Mère Royaume, a woman who poured a cauldron of hot vegetable soup on attacking soldiers, which helped alert and rally the citizens to defend the city. This heroic act has become symbolic of Geneva’s victory.
Many more details to come, including Florimont meetup, and more but for now, register here for a race or the evening walk!
